Kettlebells are an effective training tool, but not everyone can afford them. Here is one of many alternatives to get a similar loading pattern with a piece of common gym equipment – the dumbbell. Dumbbell swings do tax the grip more, chalk is recommended, since you have an open hand (not wrapped around a handle like a kettlebell).
However, the momentum from the hamstring and glute muscles during the swing should not overload the shoulder and hand to a point where the swing can not be completed.
Dumbbell swings will help you get a strong core, hands, and posterior chain.
