MYTH : If you want to lose weight you should only do cardio and not lift weights!
TRUTH : Don’t get me wrong, it may not be our favorite but there isn’t anything wrong with hitting up the treadmill for a good sweat session! 💦 However, promise me you won’t start passing up the weights!!
Let’s dive into the research.
We need to break free from the thinking that cardio equates to fat loss and weight training equates to building muscle and weight gain. It’s simply not as clear cut as that.
Doing cardio can help your fat-loss goals, but in a lot of ways weight training is more effective and will also give you a more toned body shape.
Weight training boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories post workout! With cardio your calorie burn basically ends once you’re done with your workout, but strength training keeps the calorie burn going after your session to rebuild the muscle tissue. 🔥
While lifting weights can help you build muscle mass, that muscle mass will in turn help you lose fat mass. One recent study even found that every 1 lb of muscle increases your resting metabolism by 15 calories.
If losing fat is your goal, lifting weights can only help you – KEEP IT UP!!!
PS. And if you just want to lose fat and don’t want to get hugely muscular, don’t worry, that takes a lot of concentrated effort! We’ll talk about ‘getting too bulky’ in a future fitness myth!
